Zip
Designed by Glen-L Marine
The Zip is Glen-L Marine's classic 14 ft 4 in twin-cockpit sport runabout and one of the most-built designs in the catalog. WoodenBoat's Small Boats clocked one at 32 to 33 mph solo, and it tows skiers or can be built as an open utility. Vee-bottomed hard-chine sheet plywood, about 375 lb, eight sheets of plywood, outboards to 40 hp. Glen-L publish a beam of 5 ft 9 in and a hull depth of 27 in.
They put the usual load at 2 to 4 people. The hull is a vee bottom hard chine developed for sheet plywood planking. Glen-L say the hull may be shortened if the plans are followed. They draw a matching trailer for her. A first powerboat for a great many builders: conventional plywood over frames from full-size patterns, then as much bright mahogany as you have patience for. Budget 250 to 450 hours, more for a show finish. The medians below are from real logged builds.
What building a Zip actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
