Long Steps
Designed by John Welsford
Third in the series of names after Tread Lightly and Walkabout, and drawn for the ambition behind it: further along the coast, more nights aboard. The New Zealand coast has stretches of cliff and reef where shelter is a long way off, so she has to handle seriously bad weather, and she has to be quick. The difference between averaging 3.5 and 5 knots over a day is close to two hours on a 35-mile passage, and holding a good speed on every point of sail without wearing the crew out is what matters when the days are consecutive.
A bigger sister to Walkabout, drawn for longer coastal passages and named for the ambition: further along the coast, and more nights aboard. The designer's page tells the story of the boat rather than her dimensions, and publishes no figures.
What building a Long Steps actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
