Spartan II
Designed by Paul Gartside
Paul Gartside's design #164, a 19 ft centreboard sloop and his recent reworking of the original 18 ft Spartan weekender: a foot longer, with improved hull lines and rig. Gartside calls her a light, fast boat with exciting performance, easy to launch and retrieve from a trailer and towable with a small car. The accommodation is spartan, as the name says, but adequate for weekending and short cruises.
Strip planked and sheathed in glass inside and out, which Gartside describes as construction as simple as it gets. Beam 8 ft 0 in, draft 4 ft 6 in with the board down, 500 lb of ballast in a displacement of 2,240 lb, and 237 sq ft of sail. The published sail plan shows a gaff main with a topsail and two headsails. Gartside puts the building time at 1,200 hours at an intermediate skill level. Plans are six sheets, with study plans available separately.
What building a Spartan II actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
