Mini-Cat

Designed by Michael Stevenson

A car-toppable catamaran drawn to bring second-generation racing cat speed down to a size one person can rig and launch alone. The hulls weigh 65 lb each, the rudders have two positions so she can be beached, and the company puts her performance in the region of a Hobie 14 for a fraction of the money. Their own description of sailing her is that she is docile enough for a beginner and in a gust throws water off the bows like a fire hose.

The building method is the reason she is cheap. Quarter-inch plywood sides with solid lumber hull tops and bottoms means no stringers are needed and the screw count is halved. A pair of side panels is joined and attached to one edge of the hull top, then the bulkheads and transom, then the bottom and bow piece, and the opposite side panels close her up last.
