Southwester Dory
Designed by John C. Harris
An 18 ft 10 in expedition dory by John C. Harris of Chesapeake Light Craft, a Northeaster Dory stretched and widened to 62 in to take side benches, big dry lockers and an optional outboard well. The LapStitch plywood hull weighs about 250 lb and carries 800 lb, with 844 lb of foam flotation under the seats. Builders mix a base rowing kit with a 107 sq ft lug yawl rig, a well for up to 5 hp, both or neither. Plans are also sold.
CLC rates it beginner-friendly but says some epoxy and fiberglass experience helps, and expects around 250 hours for a sailing version with the motor well. Budget 250 to 400. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Southwester Dory actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
