The Guider
Designed by John C. Harris
An 18 ft 7 in expedition sail-and-oar boat by John C. Harris of Chesapeake Light Craft, named for John Guider, who commissioned it in 2019 for the Race to Alaska after thousands of miles in a Skerry Raid. It is a ballasted double-ender with 200 lb of lead, a 72 in beam, 125 sq ft of sail, an aluminum centerboard, a rudder in an inboard trunk, 12 watertight compartments and a 6 ft 6 in cockpit where two can sleep. Hull weight is 600 lb. Kits and plans are sold.
A Pro Kit for builders already comfortable with stitch-and-glue, working from drawings and a 38-page guide. CLC estimates 300 hours; budget 350 to 600 with rig and fit-out. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
