Montauk
Built by Boston Whaler
The best known Whaler and the archetype of the open center console: a bare working deck, a console amidships, and almost nothing to go wrong. It began on the classic hull in the 1970s and has continued as a modern deep-V line. Used as a tender, a flats boat, a harbor runabout and a fishing boat, usually all by the same owner.
Every Whaler is built the same way, with foam injected between an inner and an outer fiberglass skin so the hull is structural and buoyant at once. That is why a swamped one floats, and it is also the thing to check on an older boat: foam that has taken on water adds hundreds of pounds and does not dry out, so weigh the hull rather than trusting the look of it.
What building a Montauk actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
