Captain
Built by Carver
A lapstrake outboard runabout from Carver Boat Corporation of Pulaski, Wisconsin. Carver was founded in 1954 in Milwaukee by Charles Carter and George Verhagen, who began by building mahogany runabouts and moved the company to Pulaski in 1956. The Captain ran through the early and middle 1960s alongside the Commander and the rest of the lapstrake range.
Carver built these hulls to last: a full-length triple-laminated oak keelson, pre-shaped solid oak stringers, white oak ribs, a double-planked oak transom and three-eighths inch five-ply marine plywood planking, which is what gave the lapstrake boats their reputation for a soft ride. Length varied by year, with surviving examples at 17 ft for 1962 and 17 ft 6 in for 1965, so no single figure is recorded here. Restoring one is joinery and fastening work on a wooden hull rather than a build from plans.
What building a Captain actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
What each job takes
Hours summed per builder, then the median taken across builders, so someone who logs a step in fourteen short entries doesn’t outweigh someone who logged it in one. Example logs are excluded.
