Quattro 16
Designed by Richard Woods
A 5 m (16 ft 2 in) high-performance racing beach catamaran with trapezes, designed by Richard Woods of Woods Designs and also sold by Bateau. The designer says it has proven faster than a Hobie 16 or Dart 18. The rounded vee hulls are light enough for two adults to carry the rigged boat up a beach; small skegs help tacking and protect the bottoms. Beam is 2.45 m, weight 300 lb, sail area 195 sq ft. It can also supply the outriggers for the Strike 18 trimaran.
Stitch and glue construction from 4 mm plywood keeps the hulls simple. The study plans quote about 80 hours to complete the boat; with rig and finish a first-time builder might budget 100 to 200. Real hours from logged builds are below.
