Lit'l Coot 18 Bilge Keel
Designed by Sam Devlin
An 18 ft pocket motorsailer by Sam Devlin, built stitch and glue. Twin bilge keels let it sit level and upright when the tide leaves, with 15.5 in draft, 2,300 lb displacement and 600 lb of ballast. A 9.9 hp four-stroke outboard sits on the centerline between twin linked rudders, there is an inside steering position in the small pilothouse, and the mast folds on a tabernacle. Beam is 6 ft 11 in, and it stands 7 ft 8 in high on a trailer, low enough for many garages.
Study plans, construction plans and a CNC-cut kit are offered. A small cabin boat with ballast, keels and rig rewards some prior building experience. As a rule of thumb, budget 1,000 to 1,800 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
