Dix 38 Pilot
Designed by Dudley Dix
An 11.7 m (38 ft 5 in) radius chine steel pilothouse sloop by Dudley Dix, the same hull as his Dix 38 with a pilothouse deck, and one of his most popular designs. It gives privacy for three couples in three sleeping cabins arranged around a central engine, with alternative bow and stern cabin layouts. Displacement is 10,000 kg, sail area 721 sq ft, and there are shallow and deep keels at 1.5 or 1.75 m.
The clean styling was chosen to keep metal construction economical. It remains a welding project for an experienced amateur or a yard. Expect 5,500 to 8,500 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Dix 38 Pilot actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
