Eland 36
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 36 ft 5 in (11.11 m) classically styled lapstrake plywood cruiser by Dudley Dix, developed from his Cape Deseada 36TC with a scoop stern and swim platform. It is an ocean-capable boat with a shallow 1.26 m draft, 6,600 kg displacement, 2,200 kg of bolted-on lead ballast and a 30 hp diesel. The drawn rig is a squaretop Marconi sloop of 900 sq ft; a gaff rig is promised on request.
The hull goes together over permanent plywood bulkheads that interlock egg-crate fashion with a plywood backbone, and full size Mylar bulkhead patterns come with the plans. The designer says any reasonably able handyman can build it. Expect 4,000 to 6,000 hours as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
