Mirror Dinghy

Designed by Jack Holt and Barry Bucknell

The Mirror is a 10 ft 10 in two-person sailing dinghy designed by Jack Holt with the television do-it-yourself presenter Barry Bucknell in 1962 and 1963, and launched through the Daily Mirror newspaper as a boat a family could build at home for very little money. More than 70,000 have been built, which makes it one of the most numerous sailing dinghies in the world.

She is built stitch and glue: marine plywood panels wired together and joined with glass tape, with four built-in buoyancy tanks, a 4 ft 7 in beam and a hull of about 100 lb. The red gunter rig carries a 49 sq ft main and a 20 sq ft jib, with a spinnaker for racing. Few new wooden Mirrors are built today, so most work on them is restoring old boats, and the UK Mirror Class Association keeps restoration guides and advice for owners. Wooden kits are still made by Trident UK.
