17' Disko Bay
Designed by Rob Macks
A 17 ft hard-chined Greenland-style kayak by Rob Macks of Laughing Loon, a strip interpretation of a West Greenland skin boat from the Disko Bay region, with kits from Newfound Woodworks. It is 21 in wide and about 32 lb. The bottom panels are slightly concave to mimic a loaded skin hull. The same plans build a medium-volume version or a low-volume one with a lower rear deck for rolling, and two cockpit sizes are offered.
Stripping a chined hull with hollow panels takes more care than a round-bilge kayak, so some experience helps. As a rule of thumb, budget 220 to 320 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a 17' Disko Bay actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
