17' Traveler
Designed by Hans Friedel
A 17 ft tandem tripping canoe drawn for Newfound Woodworks by Hans Friedel of Friedel Design and first launched in 2005. At Newfound's request the plumb stems of the modern hull were redrawn as traditional recurved ones, so it pairs an asymmetrical, tumblehomed, efficient hull with classic looks. About 58 lb in cedar strip, 34 in beam, 550 lb capacity, 2.25 in rocker. Newfound says it is one of its most popular designs.
An open-canoe strip build; the tumblehome needs a little extra care when stripping and removing the hull from the forms. As a rule of thumb, budget 160 to 270 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a 17' Traveler actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
