17' Sea Wolf
Designed by Hans Friedel
A 17 ft cedar-strip expedition kayak by Hans Friedel, sold by Newfound Woodworks as plans or a kit. It shares much with the Spirit but has a beamier, rounded V hull at 23.75 in, which makes it forgiving for all skill levels and steady enough for fishing or photography. About 44 lb with 300 lb capacity and room for gear on extended trips. Newfound calls it its best expedition type.
A full-size strip kayak with deck, coaming, bulkheads and hatches. The Ladder-LOC strongback in the kit shortens setup. A careful first-timer can manage it. As a rule of thumb, budget 220 to 320 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a 17' Sea Wolf actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
