Yuloh

by Amber · Kawau Bay, NZ · Message Amber

I thought I would build a yuloh to try out on my 26foot keel yacht

Basic yuloh scared from 1 1/2 x 3" western red cedar. 16 ' long with 14 degree bend.

The scarf is 15" long with a wedge glued in to get enough angle with out making the joint too short. The cedar scantlings are the timber I had at hand, I will add a couple of lamination to get final size

Cleaning up the scarf area with my favourite tool, the broad hatchet. I will the laminate a couple of layers of spruce either side.

Scarf cleaned up and 2 layers of 3/16 spruce laminated from the handle to 18" or so past the scarf

Laminates faired up and side strips for the blade glued on.

Yuloh finished, it is rather an awkward thing, and pivot and socket made

All done, just awaiting an opertunity to get out to the boat and try it!

Finally got a chance to get out and install the yuloh. Happy enough, the pin and socket pivot works well, the pin and socket are slightly oval, with the long side athwartships. There is no tendicey for the yuloh to jump out. The wind and tide was against me, (the boat is moored in narrow windy and congested waters) so I didn't take her off the mooring, but the yuloh certainly pushed her up against the wind and tide, so things look promising!
