Model boat kit
Chesapeake Bay Flattie
Kit by Midwest
The flattie was a shallow, flat bottomed sailing workboat used by Chesapeake Bay oystermen in the 1800s. Its cross planked bottom was simple to build, and its shallow draft let watermen tong for oysters over the bay's shoal bars and sail home under a leg of mutton rig.
The 1:32 kit (No. 965) is plank on frame with laser cut basswood frames, deck and hull planking, mahogany trim and a 42 page illustrated manual. The model is about 10.75 in long.
What building a Chesapeake Bay Flattie actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
