Typhoon
Built by Cape Dory
An 18 ft 6 in masthead sloop drawn by Carl Alberg and built by Cape Dory from 1967 to 1986. Alberg drew her the way he drew everything: narrow, heavy for her length, with a full keel carrying a large share of that weight low down and the rudder hung on the back of it. Around two thousand were built, and she is often called the smallest real cruising boat anybody made.
What that weight buys is motion. She will stand up to a breeze that has smaller, lighter boats reefing, she tracks and heaves to without fuss, and she is forgiving of a crew who get something wrong. What it costs is speed in light air and a trailer heavier than her length suggests. The usual work on a tired one is the deck core around the fittings, the bronze floors under the mast step and the original ports.
What building a Typhoon actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
