Islander 18
Built by Lyman
A clinker-built lapstrake runabout from Lyman Boat Works of Sandusky, Ohio, built through the 1950s and 1960s. The hull is plywood planks lapped over steam-bent frames and fastened with thousands of copper or bronze rivets, which is what gives a Lyman its look and its noise going to windward in a chop.
These are a very common restoration and a genuinely rewarding one, but they are a wood boat and should be bought as such. Expect to deal with fastenings, with the garboard and the plank lands where water sits, and with a transom that has usually gone soft around the motor cutout. A Lyman that has been kept wet and used is often in better order than one that spent ten years drying out in a barn.
What building a Islander 18 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
