Vagabond 26

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A shallow-draft offshore cruising sailboat by Jacques Mertens for Bateau, 27 ft overall and 25 ft on deck, for two on long passages and up to five on short ones. The centerboard gives 30 in of draft board up and 5 ft down. Beam is 9 ft 3 in, ballast 2,500 lb, displacement 6,100 lb and sail area 340 sq ft. Below are a vee berth, saloon, galley, enclosed head and an aft double.

The hull is a stitch and glue plywood core under structural glass skins, built upside down on a jig; the deck is foam sandwich or plywood. The designer wants builders to have finished at least one small boat first. No hours are published; budget roughly 1,500 to 3,000. Real hours from logged builds are below.
