Petrel 28
Designed by Cristian Pilo
An 8.23 m Mediterranean cruising sailboat by Cristian Pilo of Modern Wooden Boat, 8.84 m overall, drawn as a sturdy, roomy family cruiser and not a racer. The fairly symmetrical hull has a 2.64 m beam, a fixed keel with 900 kg of ballast at 1.59 m draft, and 38.6 square metres of sail. Light displacement is 2,090 kg and headroom is over 1.75 m throughout. The designer reports three boats launched, two by home builders.
The hull is radius chine plywood in okoume or mahogany over plywood bulkheads, with solid mahogany keel, stem and stringers, all epoxy glued and glass taped. It is a long project for a committed amateur. Expect 2,500 to 4,000 hours over three to five years. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Petrel 28 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
