A 65 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for steel chine construction. Key Largo was the second Coaster built, a larger Florida Bay with more generous spaces throughout, and she went into charter service, so this is one of the few designs here that can be lived aboard for a week before anybody commits to building one. Several other 65 ft layouts have been drawn on the same hull. The Coasters were drawn for the Florida Bay Coaster Company and licensed to them; with that company closed the plans are sold directly to anyone who wants one built. They are freighter yachts: ship-shaped, shoal-draft liveaboards with house-sized accommodation, meant to be lived aboard rather than raced or day-sailed.
Benford publishes a displacement of 175,000 lb in coastal cruising trim, which is tanks full with the crew and their stores aboard rather than a shipping weight. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
