Great Auk 17
Designed by Nick Schade
A 17 ft strip-planked sea kayak by Nick Schade, sold by Chesapeake Light Craft. CLC describes it as one of his more stable singles: 24 in wide, about 41 lb, with a flared bow for a dry ride, for paddlers of 150 to 220 lb and a 350 lb payload. It suits beginners, larger paddlers and multi-day trips, and can take a rudder. Kits, forms kits and full-size plans are available.
One of the simpler strip shapes in the range, though CLC still grades it intermediate. CLC estimates 180 hours and assumes a couple of earlier stitch-and-glue builds. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
