Matunuck Surf Kayak
Designed by Nick Schade
An 8 ft 6 in stitch-and-glue kayak drawn by Nick Schade purely for surfing, sold as plans and kits by Chesapeake Light Craft. It is 24 in wide and weighs about 21 lb even though it is built sturdily for rough treatment in breaking waves. CLC says it has the speed to catch waves and spins and cuts readily. Fins are optional, and standard fin boxes can be glassed into the hull. It suits paddlers up to 200 lb and is not intended for whitewater.
CLC grades it intermediate and estimates 80 hours. The okoume panels come with puzzle joints and stitching holes cut, and builders are advised to carve their own close-fitting seat. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Matunuck Surf Kayak actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
