EZ Tunnel

Designed by Bob Dillon

Built in the summer of 2011 to show that a tunnel boat can be put together by a first-time builder with a jigsaw, a drill and a belt sander. Bob Dillon stripped out every unnecessary angle and curve and replaced the usual long stringers with plywood bulkheads and girders laid out directly on the sheets, and his own boat, built entirely of 5 mm exterior plywood and pine, cost about $300 before rigging.

The result is 10 ft 10 in long, 68 in wide and about 230 lb, designed for the 30 and 35 hp OMC two-cylinders used in GT Pro and limited to motors of 35 hp and 120 lb. It took a third and a second in its first two races, and a later tweak to the bottom improved its turning, although Dillon is candid that it was designed more for easy building and straight-line speed than for racing.
