Cape Canso 23
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 6.84 m (22 ft 5 in) on deck trailable gaff cutter by Dudley Dix, added in 2022 to the lapstrake plywood family that began with the Cape Cutter 19. It carries 351 sq ft of full-batten gaff rig on 1,690 kg displacement with 650 kg of ballast, and a centreplate takes draft from 1 ft 9 in to 4 ft 9 in. The interior has a convertible dinette, enclosed head and three berths, with a four-berth option, and an 8 hp outboard.
The hull goes together over permanent bulkheads and a plywood backbone with stringers at every chine. Dix says anyone with reasonable woodworking ability can build one, and bulkhead patterns and kits are offered. Budget roughly 1,500 to 2,200 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Cape Canso 23 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
