Cargo 50
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 15.92 m (52 ft 3 in) on deck steel cargo schooner by Dudley Dix, 19.92 m overall with spars. It is a sailing workboat with a 43 cu m hold rated for about 25 tons, meant for trading under sail, or fitting out the hold as a workshop or studio. Plating is 5 mm on the multi-chine hull, with the top chine radiused. Lead ballast of 5,000 kg is backed by 5,600 kg of water ballast so stability can be trimmed to the load.
The gaff schooner rig was chosen so the original owner could fabricate everything himself, but a steel hull this size needs solid welding skills and lifting gear. Expect 10,000 hours or more as a rule of thumb. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
What building a Cargo 50 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
