Hout Bay 50
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 50 ft 2 in (15.3 m) on deck traditional steel schooner by Dudley Dix, first drawn as an excursion boat for 40 to 50 passengers and since developed into a trunk cabin cruiser with four double cabins and a poop deck pilothouse version that can carry 10 tonnes of cargo. Gaff or Marconi schooner rigs sit over a modern long fin keel and skeg rudder. Displacement is 20,650 kg. The first cruising boat once covered 1,200 miles in six days.
The multi-chine hull with a radiused top chine was chosen for quick, simple plating, and the gaff rig keeps hardware costs down for a self-builder on a modest budget. Welding skill is required. Allow 8,000 hours or more as a rough guide. Real hours from logged builds are below.
