Sabbatical
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 50 ft round bilge aluminum cruising ketch by Dudley Dix, designed for a Virginia couple and listed on his site as Sabbatical II. The rig height is kept low enough for the fixed bridges of the US Intracoastal Waterway, with a tall mizzen to keep sail area at 1,317 sq ft. It has a pilothouse with inside steering, three cabins, a walk-in engine room, a 120 hp diesel and a stern arch carrying davits and solar panels. Displacement is 19,435 kg.
The first boat was built by a professional aluminum yard. Round bilge plating over longitudinals needs real metalworking and aluminum welding skill; CAD frame patterns or cutting files are optional. Expect 10,000 hours or more as a rough guide. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Sabbatical actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
