Dix 43
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 13.35 m (43 ft 10 in) radius chine steel cruising cutter by Dudley Dix, commissioned by a circumnavigator as a go-anywhere boat for his next trip round. Scantlings follow the ABS rules for ocean racing yachts, with 4 mm topsides and 5 mm bottom and chine plate. Displacement is 14,300 kg with 4,000 kg of ballast, sail area 984 sq ft, draft 1.45 or 1.8 m, and aft or centre cockpit versions are drawn. Cutting files exist for steel and aluminum.
The hull is shaped for easy plating, and pre-cut plate saves a good deal of lofting and cutting. It still needs sound welding skills. Expect 7,000 to 10,000 hours as a rule of thumb. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
