Hout Bay 33
Designed by Dudley Dix
A 33 ft 7 in (10.25 m) radius chine steel cruising cutter by Dudley Dix, the bigger sister of the Hout Bay 30. It is offered with a flush deck for interior volume or a trunk cabin, with a skeg or balanced spade rudder, and with a fully inboard Marconi cutter rig of 628 sq ft or a gaff cutter. Displacement is 8,000 kg with 2,500 kg of lead ballast on a 1.5 m draft. There are two private sleeping cabins.
The 3 mm plating is built over temporary frames on stringers, which the designer puts well within reach of a skilled amateur. Welding experience is needed. As a rule of thumb, allow 3,500 to 5,500 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
What building a Hout Bay 33 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
