Tamanu
Designed by Gary Dierking
The Tamanu is a 20 foot outrigger sailing canoe designed by Gary Dierking, one of the boats in his book Building Outrigger Sailing Canoes. It is a light three-board canoe: a narrow plywood main hull about 20 inches wide with a flat bottom and moderate rocker, fully decked with a self-bailing cockpit, carrying an 80 square foot crab-claw sail. The hull can be built quickly from 1/4 inch or 3/16 inch plywood with taped seams, and the amas can be foam and glass or hollow plywood. It can be rigged as a single outrigger at about 9 ft 2 in overall beam, a double outrigger at about 12 ft 6 in, or as a small catamaran.
What building a Tamanu actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
