Jolly Roger
Designed by Grandpa's Archive
Jolly Roger is a small flat-bottomed skiff from a vintage how-to article aimed, in its own words, at young men from 8 to 80. It was pitched as a pond boat for a youngster that could double as a yacht dinghy for father, and the photograph shows a grown man standing to cast from it.
Construction is conventional: a form on legs carries temporary mould frames, the keel, chines, seat risers and clamps are bent around them, and the moulds come out once the hull is planked. The materials list calls for hardwood framing, chines about 9 ft long, cross-planked bottom boards and plywood sides from a 1/4 x 30 in x 9 ft panel, which puts the boat at roughly nine feet. Galvanized shingle nails, Cascophen glue and canvas cement round out the list. The scan is a free download.
What building a Jolly Roger actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
