Petrel 33
Designed by Cristian Pilo
A 9.9 m cruising sailboat by Cristian Pilo of Modern Wooden Boat, the larger development of his Petrel 28. It has six full-size berths, about 1.90 m headroom and a 20 to 30 hp inboard diesel or 7 kW electric drive. Beam is 3.03 m, draft 1.80 m, ballast 1,300 kg in a fixed steel fin, design displacement 4,050 kg and upwind sail area 47.3 square metres.
Construction is radius chine plywood: 12 mm planking, doubled 6 mm layers at the radius, over plywood bulkheads and solid wood stringers. The designer says basic woodworking skill is enough; the steel keel needs welding. Expect 4,000 to 6,000 hours over several years. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Petrel 33 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
