Flats River Skiff 14
Designed by Salt Boatworks
The two-person version of the Flats River Skiff 12, at 13 ft 8 in long and 4 ft 2 in wide with a hull weight of about 150 lb. She draws around 5 in loaded, carries 500 lb and takes up to 15 hp, which the designers say gives about 25 mph; one builder reports 2.5 in of draft with himself, gear and fuel aboard. An open deck leaves space for a grab rail and cooler, and the foredeck holds gear and a trolling motor.
She is built stitch and glue from six sheets of quarter-inch marine plywood using full-size patterns cut with a jigsaw, and the FRS 12 video series applies to her as well. Salt Boatworks estimates 75 hours and $1,200 to $1,500 of materials, and sells her as plans only. A good first boat for anyone who wants to fish skinny water with a friend.
