Fliptail

Designed by Benjy

A folding dinghy from Woodenwidget sold as one plan set covering 6 ft 2 in, 7 ft 2 in and 9 ft versions. Two sets of hinged laminated hoops swing out from a wooden keel assembly, two plywood floors drop in, and the PVC cloth skin pulls taut; it opens or folds in about a minute. The smallest weighs from 15 kg and carries 150 kg, the 9 footer from 23 kg and 250 kg. All take a 3.3 hp outboard and can be rigged to sail.

The designer aims it at people with no boatbuilding experience; laminating the four hoops on one jig, a day apiece, sets the pace. No hours are published, so budget 40 to 80. Measured medians from build logs appear below.

Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
