Penobscot 14

A 14 ft sail-and-oar boat by Arch Davis, featured in a three-part WoodenBoat magazine series in 1997 and 1998. The round-bilged hull has a 4 ft 6 1/2 in beam and weighs 155 to 175 lb. Plans show gunter (95 sq ft), lug (77) and sprit (73) rigs and a daggerboard or centerboard.
It is glued lapstrake plywood with a twist: the planks are glued and screwed to fore-and-aft stringers, which removes most of the clamping, stiffens the hull and does away with transverse frames. The designer aimed it at builders with modest woodworking skills and notes that complete beginners have finished one. He says six months of spare time is a realistic average. By his Penobscot 13 figure, allow about 350 hours. Real hours from logged builds are below.
