14 ft Sloop Happy

Designed by Jay R. Benford

A 14 ft design from Jay Benford's catalog, drawn for cold moulded construction. Happy carries the biggest story in the catalog for her size: Howard Wayne Smith sailed one roughly 10,000 miles from Miami heading for Australia before losing her on a reef off Noumea, in New Caledonia. She is a long-distance cruiser drawn at a length most people would call a dinghy, and the designer is candid that the thinking behind crossing oceans in the shortest boat imaginable is a question of its own. From the pocket cruiser and tabloid yacht group. In the older usage the designer is deliberately keeping alive, a pocket cruiser is a small cruising powerboat and a tabloid yacht a small cruising sailboat. Small cruising yachts have always been the most popular boats: big enough to sleep aboard, small enough to afford and to handle single-handed.

Benford publishes an estimated structural weight of 2,240 lb. Plans are sold to owner-builders, and study plans are sold separately for anyone wanting to look before committing.
