A 14 ft traditional sailing sharpie by Jacques Mertens for Bateau, drawn for the Indian River in Florida where the design office sits. Sailing came first, rowing a close second and outboard use last, which explains the pinched stern; a 2 hp motor is the limit. It carries a 65 sq ft sprit rig. Beam is 4 ft 6 in and designed weight 130 lb, enough for a family in protected water.
The designer says there is nothing difficult here: a flat-bottomed stitch and glue hull with butt blocks instead of scarfs, needing no woodworking skills or special tools. The designer's average for the hull is 25 hours; with spars, foils and paint budget 50 to 100 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
