Penobscot 17

Designed by Arch Davis

A 17 ft sail-and-oar cruising boat by Arch Davis, drawn for builders who liked the Penobscot 14 but needed more boat. It is a new design and not a scale-up, a little leaner in proportion, with a 5 ft 4 in beam and a weight of 260 to 300 lb. Rig choices are a gunter sloop of 132 sq ft, a ketch of 118 or a schooner of 139.

Glued lapstrake 6 mm plywood over fore-and-aft stringers, with 3/4 in plywood bulkheads. The designer says it is no harder than the 14 for a builder with some woodworking experience, since the curves are easier, and advises being ready to spend as much as a year. Budget 500 to 800 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
