Core Sound 17
Designed by Graham Byrnes
A 17 ft cat ketch daysailer and camp cruiser by Graham Byrnes of B&B Yacht Designs, and the first boat the firm offered as a CNC kit. Stitch and glue plywood, 350 to 400 lb hull weight, 119 sq ft of self-tacking sail, a kick-up centerboard and rudder, and a draft of 7 1/2 in. With close to 400 plans and kits sold, it has won the Great Race twice and took line honors in the 2006 Everglades Challenge. It sleeps two under a tent, and comes with an aft deck or an aft cockpit.
B&B says no special building skills are needed. The kit has finger scarfs, tenoned bulkheads and pre-drilled stitch holes. Budget 400 to 700 hours as a rough guide. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
