Dory 12
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 12 ft flat-bottomed rowing and sailing skiff by Jacques Mertens of Bateau. The name came from an early builder; the designer says it is not a true dory. Oars are the main propulsion and it rows best with one aboard, though it carries a passenger or two as a tender and sails well under a 35 sq ft sprit rig. Beam is 3 ft 8 in and designed weight 62 lb.
Stitch and glue plywood, kept simple by the flat bottom, and described by the designer as ideal for a first-time project with no special tools. The designer's figure is about 25 hours for the hull, so budget 40 to 70 hours with finishing and rig. Real hours from logged builds are below.
