Jon Boat / Garvey 16
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 15 ft 11 in flat-bottom garvey by Jacques Mertens, the largest of the GF jon boat series from Bateau / Boat Builder Central. It doubles as a jon boat, duck boat or work skiff. Beam is 5 ft 2 in, hull weight about 165 lb, draft 5 in and displacement 1,310 lb at the design waterline, with 15 hp recommended.
Stitch and glue, with the bottom a plywood-cored glass sandwich. Most cuts are straight lines, and the designer says a first-time builder can do it. His figure is 20 hours for the hull and 40 or more finished; a first build more often takes 60 to 120. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Jon Boat / Garvey 16 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
