Lobster Boat 26

Designed by Jacques Mertens

A 26 ft 3 in lobster-style powerboat by Jacques Mertens for Bateau / Boat Builder Central, plan LB26, with an inboard diesel or gas engine of about 200 hp. Beam is 8 ft 6 in, draft 16 in, displacement 5,400 lb, bare hull weight 2,500 lb, and it carries 90 gallons of fuel.

Foam sandwich is the preferred hull material, planked in wide foam sheets and glassed both sides; a plywood-cored composite version is the alternative. The designer says anyone who has finished one of his jig-built boats can manage it, with the inboard engine and rudder as the new ground. His figure is 120 hours for the hull and 300 to 800 finished; many amateurs should allow 1,500 or more. Real hours from logged builds are below.
