A 12 ft 8 in rowing boat, Jacques Mertens' version of the classic McInnis bateau, sold by Bateau / Boat Builder Central as the MI12. The type sits alongside the Adirondack guide boats: shaped like a wide canoe but rowed with oars. This version uses three plywood panels per side, which the designer says comes within a fraction of an inch of the original round hull. Hull weight is 65 to 85 lb.
Epoxy-plywood composite built upside down on a simple jig made from the frames and one MDF centre piece. The designer says a first-timer could build it, though epoxy experience saves labor, and estimates 30 hours for hull and jig plus 5 to 20 to finish. Budget 60 to 120.
