A 12 ft 6 in round-bilged rowing boat, Jacques Mertens' take on the classic McInnis bateau, sold by Bateau / Boat Builder Central as the MI12S. It keeps the original round hull, close to the lines published by John Gardner, in a type related to the Adirondack guide boats: canoe-like in shape but wider and rowed with oars. Beam is 4 ft and hull weight 60 to 80 lb.
The hull is strip planked, and the plans cover three materials: cedar strips, plywood strips or foam sandwich. The designer says a first-time builder could do it, calling strip planking laborious but uncomplicated, and estimates about 100 hours for hull and jig plus 10 to 25 to finish. Budget 150 to 250.
