Plyak 12
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 12 ft 4 in plywood kayak for touring and fishing, by Jacques Mertens for Bateau. It is a hybrid between a sit-on-top and a sit-in: the cockpit is self-draining and easy to get in and out of, yet the paddler sits low and has the storage of a decked boat. The simple vee hull with a skeg is 33 in wide, weighs 38 to 50 lb depending on plywood thickness, and displaces 350 lb at the designed waterline.
The designer calls it one of the easiest boats in the range and suitable for a first-time builder: the stitch and glue panels and frames are symmetrical fore and aft. No build time is published; budget 50 to 100 hours. The medians below come from builders who logged this boat here.
What building a Plyak 12 actually takes
Medians from the build logs kept on this site, not the designer’s estimate. Nobody has logged this boat here yet, so they are empty until the first builder does.
Those medians firm up as more people log this boat.
