Ranger

Designed by Paul Fisher

A simple single-chine, flat-bottomed canoe by Paul Fisher of Selway Fisher Design, aimed at first-time and young builders who want a quick, low-cost boat for inland waters. One plan set covers a 12 ft and a 15 ft 10 in version, both 32 in in beam, built either as an open canoe or as a decked kayak with built-in buoyancy and stowage. The 12 footer weighs about 30 lb and carries 370 lb; the longer boat about 40 lb and 550 lb. Extra sheets cover stabilising floats and 8 ft, 17 ft and 24 ft variants.

Stitch and tape from just two sheets of 4 or 6 mm exterior plywood. Budget 40 to 80 hours. Measured medians from build logs appear below.
