Chenoa 12
Designed by Jacques Mertens
A 12 ft 1 in single-chine canoe by Jacques Mertens of Bateau, built from four plywood panels in the look of a traditional Native American canoe with high recurved ends. The waterline is narrow for speed, so the hull wants to be loaded down to its chine: this size suits one adult, or an adult and child, up to 200 lb. Beam is 30 in and finished weight 40 to 45 lb. Sizes are 12, 14 and 16 ft; the Hiawatha is the six-panel sister.
Stitch and glue with no mold, only three light battens to set the shape. The designer's figure is 20 to 25 hours for the hull and 20 or more to fair and paint. Real hours from logged builds are below.
